This is not a thesis on spiritual backing, but merely some thoughts on the power of doing ministry with a large team behind you. A dangerous tendency of us missionaries is to do it alone (it still feels weird to say “us missionaries”). As a family, we’ve made it a goal to always have spiritual and natural backing. "Doing it alone" sounds exciting and adventurous. No ties, no rules, no attachments. It's us against the world! Sadly, it doesn’t represent the Kingdom of God very well. How can we encourage others to becomes Christians and join “the church” unless we show them a decent example of what it is? The living church is a vibrant community of people working together to accomplish the Great Commission. Any church, ministry or person can try to do it alone, but it’s not what we’re called to do. All of us are part of the worldwide body of Christ. We need a team.
We are so thankful to be sent and supported by churches (including our home church, Destiny Church) and people from around the world (even Denmark!). While over here, we have met some well-meaning people who “go it alone.” They receive no spiritual support from anyone overseas. It seems to be a sad way of doing life, let alone ministry. I can’t imagine doing what we’re doing without a strong spiritual family standing behind us. We are sent by people. If you are reading this, we are here because of you! In a way, we represent you. We are ambassadors of the goodness of God and the goodness of the people who stand behind us. We represent the church.
During a few difficult days, we’ve received much needed encouragement from around the world — prayers, letters, financial support. All of it means so much to us. I refuse to “go it alone” because that way is boring and unadventurous. The aspect we’ve enjoyed the most about missions is the new connections we’ve made. These connections are more valuable than any financial gift we could receive. We feel like many future adventures have been launched because of the people we've met. We love the people of God! We are one small part of God’s global plan to redeem mankind. We want to be part of the greatest movement the world has ever seen. We are so thankful to be sent and supported by you — our friends, family and fellow world-changers. Don't do it alone.
